In Melaka - Restoran Huang Chang Chicken Rice, Batu Berendam ...

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 09:01 AM PDT

When it comes to associating food to a place or location, chicken rice ball to Malacca (Melaka) is like assam laksa to Penang or siew pao (crispy BBQ pork bun) to Seremban. Somehow or some odd way, they are automatically linked due to their popularity since aeons ago. But of course, there is also Nyonya food which is yet another popular delicacy in Malacca but that's another different story to be told.

Huang Chang Chicken Rice Restaurant, Batu Berendam

Spotting a restaurant/shop selling chicken rice ball in Malacca (or at least around the hotspots area) is even easier than looking for a 7-11 shop. They are everywhere to be seen with the popular ones like Hoe Kee and Chung Hwa located along the Jonker Walk.

Chili Sauce

Condiments

I've been to both on different times and they were more or less the same with slightly different style. It all depends on the person's favourite/palate on which is the best. There are, of course, other restaurants that sell chicken rice balls along Jonker Street but those two mentioned earlier are really popular that tourists are willing to queue under the hot sun just to dine there.

However, on my recent visit to Malacca, I didn't bother to queue nor fancy them at all. Instead, my friend took me to other restaurant which is said to be famous too amongst the locals. That said, the journey to this restaurant is not as easy as the ones in Jonker Street and hence, my friend's guidance.

Although we were there early close to 12PM, most of the tables, even the ones outside of the shop, were mostly occupied with a few being filled with dirty dishes. Nevertheless, that and the vast crowd didn't dampen our enthusiasm as we persisted and surged ahead waiting patiently for our orders to arrive.

Lobak

Whilst waiting for our food, my friend bought a plate full of fried stuff at nearby stall (a motorbike, to be exact) as appetiser. Prawn crackers, fishcakes, beancurds, pineapples and cucumbers were all sliced into smaller pieces before drenching them with sweet spicy sauce.

Chicken Rice Balls

There are various old stories/theories behind these rice balls but I shall leave it to you to search for it. These balls are pretty small in actual size. To put into perspective, 5 of these are equivalent to 1 bowl of rice… and that also varies to different restaurants as they have different measurements.

Chicken Rice Balls

That said, they were delicious and to consume them is up to one's approach. Eat it as its own, soak them in chilli sauce or soak them in chilli sauce and dark soy before consuming it will bring different results. I've learned the latter way and I've got to say I like it although I prefer to have my rice on its own. Soft and mushy at the center yet filled with chicken essence, they were delightful to go along with the poached chicken.

Poached Chicken

There's nothing to shout about for the poached chicken though. Although I do give credit to them for chopping the chicken nicely in piece unlike Chung Hwa's version which sometimes looked like a train wreck, they were served cold but not ice cold though. Being a Chinese in me, I prefer my dishes to be warm but I understand that there's a reason why poached/steamed chicken can't be sliced when it's hot. Nevertheless, they were pretty tasty and tender.

Chicken Rice Ball

Overall, we paid RM 17.20 for a half portion of chicken, 20 rice balls and two cups of teh-peng (teh ais/ iced milk tea). Price wise, I think they are much cheaper than the famous ones I mentioned early but in terms of crowd, they are no better as the queue was formed outside the shop when we left around 1PM.

live life fun like moi!: Light Jigging @ Tanjung Tuan, Port ...

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 01:57 AM PDT

I am back!! To continue my silly story....

Once we are ready, we set out to the sea..sorry no pictures of the sea, which is windy with lots of waves... T.T Now I have been on a boat / speedboat and whatsoever before either for work or for leisure, but things that I've never experienced before...staying in the middle of the sea: bobbing to the tunes of the waves... I know, double sick to the stomach...I am trying to be brave and encourage myself by pretending that I will not get sea-sick...

Wahahahaaa.....BUT....!! I am so wrong... T.T'' Right like 5mins after we stopped at the first pit stop out on the open sea...I feel dizzy...and nauseous..I just had enough time to grab (*blush*) and gulp down some sea sickness / motion sickness medicines..BOY I am so glad we had it along...and abang shah the tekong pity me....I can even feel my face turning green...hahahahaa......so we switched place.

We went near to the lighthouse and began our jiggingz....Well, remember the picture in part 1: the pretty scenery...that's the spot we jig and jig...

We were lucky the weather was surprisingly good considering the heavy rainfall of late. Windy even with the scorching sun makes it bearable even to someone like me, who's forever sweating!

Anyhow, we jig and jig and suddenly abang shah jig's was pulled....and:

*voila! Little baby grouper...which has been released back safe and sound..hehhe*

and the energy got buzzing, with the mood which is cheery and light...I still think and belief when you are happie the fishes will comes along too...hahahha...dumb la me! o.O

Around noon with no more signs of fishes as the sun is shining brightly, we decided to go back for lunch and a short break...don't ask me why no pictures of my lunch and toilet (of cuz there's a toilet!) or our lunch place, as I am simply too tired. Just want to sit there and drink icy cool drink...hahahahah...sorrriieee..

About 2 something we went to continue our jiggingz..and......here comes the goodies....

*he got a fun fight with the GT! Strong phfishh even with the small size, which is slightly more than 1KG*
*I couldn't resist to camwhore too...part of the reason being sked of not being able to land any fish at all for the trip T.T'' *
I've heard numerous times before, first timer for jigging trip might come back with empty hand...hahaha...but I am still looking on the bright side yeah!
We circled the same spot to continue our jigginz...and see see see:
*abang shah with another bigger grouper*
And my mood wasn't dampened, I am a newbie to jigging larr..what do you expect..and it doesn't disappoint me, NOT at all..by that time, I was planning on the return trip to get a fish with jig...(Making up my mind and convincing myself that I am not gonna get any fish this trip, but without feeling of disappointment, really one!).
The slight tug, and the pulling, just not so strong..and being a NOOB that I am, I wasn't sure and should also say I didn't dare to belief that I got a fish on the other end of my line!!!!
WOHOHOHOHHOHOHOOOOOOOOO~~~:
*I know, I know..it's not huge..but the feeling you can never understand if you are not a fisher..hahaa*
I hooked up an okay sized grouper...! My license for jigging, yeah man! I cannot wipe out the grin on my silly face...happiness.....
We jig more and by the time we made our way back, the sun was setting...seems like there's an additional jiggerz now to the fishing society..hahahaha...I want to come back for more...I want the GT!!
No amount of motion sickness, no amount of sun burning, skin peeling (aftermath), fear of standing up freestyle on a rocking boat (without safety jacket, even though I can swim, still scary la) and other issues will keep me from coming back again..!
Oh yeah..I will be there again! This weekend~!! *stupid grin on face, AGAIN...taahahahhaha*

Attractions in Melaka, Malaysia | Backpacking – Who says, NO ...

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 02:22 AM PDT

The Historic city of Melaka is the third smallest Malaysian state, after Perlis and Penang.

Melaka is located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, on the Straits of Malacca. It borders Negeri Sembilan to the north and the state of Johor to the south. The capital is Malacca City, which is 148 km south east of Malaysia's capital city Kuala Lumpur, 235 km north west to Johor's largest city Johor Bahru and 95 km north west to Johor's second largest city Batu Pahat. This historical city centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7 July 2008.

Although it was the location of one of the earliest Malay sultanates, the monarchy was abolished when the Portuguese conquered it in 1511. The Yang di-Pertua Negeri or Governor, rather than a Sultan, acts as the head of state now.

To get to Melaka, the easiest way is to take a bus from KL, which takes about 2 hours bus ride to Melaka Sentral (Melaka Bus Station)

Here is a pictorial of the highlights of what to expect when visiting Melaka.

Melaka was declared a UNESCO world heritage site the same time as Penang. Unlike Penang, Melaka is more of a historical play ground minus the booming night life and beaches. If you are planning to travel to Melaka, make sure you expect a lot of quiet ME time with yourself, plenty of good food and of course the history.

If your visit, is during the week-end. Make sure you make time to visit the famous week-end night market – Jonker Walk.

What is amazing about this stall was that, the food here really looked like real food. Except some of them were actually money boxes.

tang yuan - glutinous rice balls in syrup

Try the local deserts. This dish is called Tang Yuan, which is basically glutinous rice balls (filled or just plain balls), cooked in flavoured syrup. The balls are sometimes filled with black sesame or crushed peanuts. There are of course the modern improvisations like chocolate fillings and oreos.

Kampung Kling Mosque, Malacca

Built in 1748, the Kampung Kling Mosque along Jalan Tukang Emas in Malacca is among the oldest mosques in Malaysia. The minaret was built entirely of masonry in contrast to the accompanying timber mosque. It has an appearance similar to a Chinese pagoda or stupa form, another Malacca characteristic.

melaka river cruise backpackies

cruising down melaka river

An interesting and unique tour which visitors must not miss while you are in Malacca, is the Malacca River Boat Tour.

Due to the tidal tide conditions, the river boat will only operate when there is high tide. So visitors interested to take this cruise are recommended to check up first on the operating times. Also, the river cruise will only operate with a minimum 8 persons per voyage. The river boat will cruise up the shallow Malacca River from her river mouth to Kampong Morten where the boat makes her return trip. The distance is about 10 km from the jetty and takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. A tour guide will highlight interesting things to you.

The boats depart every 30-45 minutes from morning till late night (11.30 pm) on a daily basis. On this river cruise, visitors get to observe the city surroundings by the riverside, including, but not limited to, old bridges, historical landmarks, modern buildings, traditional villages, museums, piers and other curious sights. It is recommended to take the river cruise at night, which is when most of the structures and buildings along with fountains are lit with colourful neon lights and bulbs. The boats feature a narration on the various scenery by a tour guide or through radio speakers installed on the boat. On peak periods, the queues can be amazingly long.

The jetty is located just opposite the police station near the Dutch Square (Stadthuys) and tickets may be purchased at MYR10 per adult and MYR5 for children.

satay celup melaka

satay celup melaka

Satay Celup is another signature dish of Melaka. You will not find this dish anywhere else in Malaysia. Although it looks like the Lok Lok in Penang or has the same concept as the Chinese steamboat but it is slightly different.

The main difference is satay celup is cooked by dipping or dunking in sticks of raw foods into boiling pot of aromatic rich and spicy peanut sauce. What makes Satay Celup special is the peanut sauce! Workers will consistently go to each table to mix or top up the peanut sauce. The sauce has to be well stirred so that it is cooked consistently so that when you dip into it, it is fragrant enough.

nyonya laksa melaka

Melaka nyonya laksa

The nyonya laksa was awesome. This was taken at Jonker 88 Desserts. The laksa wasnt spicy at all, and there was a generous scoop of tune bits with half an egg in each bowl. Overall this isa good place to sit and savour Melaka's favourite dishes. Also do try their Nyonya Chendol as well, with (durian ice cream if you dare).

We hope we did make Melaka attractive enough for you to make a visit there. (Don't mind the edited pictures to make the food and places look nicer :p)
