Flood victim grateful family is safe despite inundated home ... Posted: 06 Nov 2012 04:35 AM PST The Star, November 6, 2012 SEPANG: Flood victims seeking shelter at the Dewan Orang Ramai Dengkil are counting their blessings despite the difficulties. "It is hard. There is not much space for us, but we are glad to be safe," said 70-year-old grandmother Marian Melut. The hall is currently home to some 530 people whose homes in Kampung Prai were flooded on Sunday. "Our homes have been flooded many times before, but this time it is quite bad and we are forced to evacuate. Even if we have to stay here for a week, I don't mind as my husband, my five children and grandchildren are all by my side," she added. Marian said she first realised that water had seeped into her wooden house in Kampung Prai on Sunday morning when she woke up to perform her morning prayers. "I alerted my family members and started packing our stuff. Thankfully the rescue team arrived on time to take us to the shelter," she said. Meanwhile in MALACCA, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam has warned of the possibility of major floods in the state and advised all relevant agencies to be prepared. He said heavy rain over the past few days would cause rivers to swell and overflow, triggering floods. "Floods may occur simultaneously in many places in the state. We are monitoring the Malacca River, particularly at Durian Tunggal, which usually gets an overflow of water from upstream," he said. In the Klang Valley, several areas, including the Subang Airport Road came to a standstill as floodwaters inundated the road during the afternoon downpour. Marcia who works at the Kelana Business Centre across the road, has a good view of the road from her office. "It is usual for it to get flooded during heavy rain, but today, it was exceptional, with both lanes filled with water," she said. Flash floods and traffic congestion were also reported at several areas along the LDP and Federal Highway. In TELUK INTAN, Hilir Perak district civil defence officer Fazly Mohd Zawawi said 258 people were evacuated to three relief centres. "We expect them to be here for at least two days," he said.
